1976
SMS Founded

SMS emerges in the IT marketplace by introducing high performance IBM-compatible mainframe systems to the federal government.

1985
Army Desktop Deployment

SMS begins the Army’s first mass deployment of desktop computers, supplying 47,000 users with customized systems and Local Area Networks.

1988
Internet Protocol

The word “internet” appears in the Washington Post for the first time referencing an SMS contract award of early Cisco routers for the Air Force.

1990
SMS.com

SMS claims ‘sms.com’ on 5/23/1990 and becomes just the 523rd ‘.com’ domain ever registered.

1991
Telecommunications Modernization

SMS provides exclusive network solutions to Bell Atlantic in support of the government’s massive Telecommunications Modernization Project (TEMPO).

1995
Pentagon Renovation

SMS joins the Pentagon Renovation team to build a SONET ring network connecting 3 buildings in Crystal City, VA with the Pentagon.

2001
9/11

In the days following the attacks on the Pentagon, SMS builds and deploys emergency networks in Crystal City for 3500 displaced workers.

2003
Survivable Pentagon Network

SMS provides network architecture and engineering for the Defense Secretary’s Command Communications Survivability Program.

2009
West Wing

SMS modernizes the West Wing network infrastructure to improve overall redundancy and stability.

2011
New Campus East

SMS supports the planning, design, and deployment of the IT enterprise and systems for the government’s 2.3 million square foot New Campus East (NCE) building.

2014
Joint Regional Security Stacks Consolidation

SMS begins migration efforts to consolidate 400 worldwide points of presence to 25 redundant and survivable sites for the Defense Department’s Joint Regional Security Stacks program.

2015
Prime Contract Awards

SMS receives prime contract awards on the Air Force Network-Centric Solutions-2 (NETCENTS-2) Network Operations vehicle as well as Solutions for Enterprise Wide Procurement (SEWP V).

2016
Quality Management

SMS expands its quality management system with certification in the ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 service management system.

2019
Air Force Task Orders

Within four years of award on the NETCENTS-2 contract, SMS wins over twenty task orders, supporting Air Force operations in more than a dozen states.

2021
Celebrating 45 Years

Supporting innovative Army cloud programs at Enterprise Cloud Management Agency and Enterprise IT as a service, while continuing support at Pentagon Joint Services Program, DISA Joint Regional Security Stacks, Air Force task orders across the country, various Army installations, New Campus East, and Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

2023
RS3 Contract Vehicle

SMS wins over $100M in Air Force task order recompetes on the RS3 Small Business contract vehicle.

2024
Cloud with SMS

SMS establishes the Platform Engineering team to provide dedicated Cloud and DevOps support to its commercial customers, including a new domain and website, cloudwithsms.com.
